When I arrived at JCK Magazine in 1997, I was following in the footsteps of gemstone editor and photographer Robert Weldon. While I had become fairly accomplished at taking photomicrographs (images through a microscope), I was no match for Robert’s macro photography. So I had to develop my own skill set to shoot gems in a hurry at gem and jewelry shows. All of these images seen here are taken using a Nikon Coolpix 995, a portable stage, and only available lighting. I used this technique through 2009 for JCK, and through 2015 for both the Baselworld Daily News and the Roskin Gem News Report, as well as contributing features in other gem and jewelry publications.
